WIEGO is an international network of organizations of informal workers, researchers/statisticians and international development professionals, established in 1997 to improve the status of the working poor, especially women, in the informal economy. WIEGO’s programmes and projects are undertaken by staff, partner organisations and consultants located in many different countries, mostly in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

We’re looking for someone with leadership skills to ensure the operational viability of a complex international development organisation that operates in a ‘virtual workplace’, along with experience in management and administration of voluntary organisations, charities or NGOs.

Working in close cooperation with the US-based Secretariat, and reporting to the Company Secretary, s/he will be responsible for the management of Manchester office operations: operational systems and the operations team, grant management and fund-raising, events and logistics, human resources, and support to the Company Secretary to ensure good governance.

Person Specification 

Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Leadership skills to ensure the operational viability of a complex international organisation that operates in a ‘virtual workplace’, requiring early identification of potential problems, risks and opportunities, and innovative procedures and processes for effective management and administration.
  • Experience in management and administration of voluntary organisations, charities and/or NGOs, including:
o   Preparing proposals and reports to donor agencies
o   Preparing and monitoring budgets
o   Managing staff and contractors
o   Project planning, monitoring and reporting
  • Experience of working in an international, multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing
  • Good IT skills, particularly in word-processing, spreadsheets, and internet applications.
  • Good inter-personal skills, and ability to cooperate and work as part of a team in a complex network
  • Understanding of issues related to international development and gender
  • Willingness and ability to travel, both within the UK and overseas
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours
  • College degree, higher qualification, or research experience
 
Desirable Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
 
  • Work or education experience in developing countries
  • Foreign language skills (specifically Spanish, French, Portuguese, Gujurati, Hindi or Marathi.)
  • Understanding of issues relating to employment, labour markets, and informal economy issues
  • Understanding of trade unions, cooperatives and/or other forms of workers’ organisations.
